GOLF: Woodley and Haines help Somerset to national finals

TWO golfers from Sedgemoor were part of the Somerset team that won the South West Inter Counties Match Week at Bristol and Clifton last week.
Hannah Woodley, a member at Enmore Park, and Jess Haines, of Burnham and Berrow, are now set to join the rest of their team-mates in the inter-county finals at Denham Golf Club in Buckinghamshire in September.
Somerset have not won the championship in 66 years.
Meanwhile team of seven Enmore Ladies scored a 6-1 success over their counterparts from Mendip in a competition contested by 18 clubs across Somerset.
On Wednesday the Ladies in Division One played in the Eccles competition which was won by Beverley Broad – who plays off a handicap of nine – with 35 points. Julie Stafford (17) was second with 32 while captain Julie Blumgart (16) was third with 30.
The Eloise Grace competition for Division Two players saw four ladies return with 33 points with Anne Elliott-Rose (34) the winner on countback. Second place went to  Hilary Cockcroft (29), Lorraine Taylor (27) was third while Janet Waplington (26) was fourth.
The Ladies’ Nine Hole Qualifier was won by Teresa Warren (25) with 12 points while Pat Chapman (26) was second on countback from Miriam Batchelor(17) after both returned with 11.
Thursday’s Club Stableford for Ladies and Gents attracted 104 entrants and was won by Rob Hake (5) with 40 points. Tom Pople (6) was second with 38 on countback from Robin Francis (16).
The Gents Invitation on Saturday for Member/Guest that attracted 123 entrants. It was won by George Alexiou (12) and Paul Thorogood (12) but only after countback put them ahead of Chris Grimshaw (17) and Curtis Edwards (-2) after both carded 46 points.
Third place went to Carl Netto (9) and Chris Holt (19) with 44.
The Enmore Royals travelled to Minehead where they were beaten 5½ to ½. The only scorers were Mike Sullivan and Tony Deeble.
