SOMERSET make a welcome return to action today when they entertain Worcestershire at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton for a two-day pre-season friendly which gets underway at 11am.
The last time the two sides met in red-ball cricket was in last season’s Bob Willis Trophy at Blackfinch New Road, a match that Somerset won by 60 runs.
Head coach Jason Kerr said: “It’s been a challenging but extremely productive winter and the guys are itching to play some cricket. It looks like the weather is set fair and we’re looking forward to taking on Worcestershire over two days.
“At this time of year it’s important that the players are getting as much competitive cricket as possible. They’ve done all the hard yards in their preparation and now it’s about getting that match sharpness.
“I dare say that there will be a few nerves as the we get closer to that first ball, but the guys are desperate to get out there and showcase their skills and build on what we achieved last year.”
Craig Overton, who will captain the side, said: “It will be nice to get back out playing on grass and all the boys are looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead. That starts against Worcestershire this week and we’re all up for it.
“Being named as skipper is obviously a nice feeling and it’s a great honour to captain this club, even in a pre-season game. It’s a game I’m looking forward to and hopefully we can start the season well.”
Kerr has named the following 13 man squad: Ben Green, Tom Lammonby, George Bartlett, James Hildreth, Eddie Byrom, Steve Davies, Craig Overton (c), Roelof van der Merwe, Lewis Goldsworthy, Kasey Aldridge, Marchant de Lange, Josh Davey and Ned Leonard.

Somerset’s next match takes place on Tuesday (March 23) at Taunton when they welcome Gloucestershire for another two-day friendly.
