No joking around as Steve Martin lands the spoils at Brean

STEVE Martin claimed the Bill Anderson Memorial Trophy as he scored an excellent nett 67 in the November Medal at Brean Golf Club.

Martin, who was the only player to beat par in testing conditions, recorded a four stroke victory over Zak Jones in Division Three with Jack Shepherd taking third on 72.

In the middle tier both Simon Baunton and Clive Goode posted sub 70 nett scores and the two cards of 69 were only separated by a back nine countback. Baunton was deemed the winner ahead of Goode while John Cranley took third by shading a countback with Barrie Tucker after both had nett 73s.

David Porter was the only player to break 80 gross in the blustery conditions and this was enough for a victory in Division One for him. His nett 70 was three clear of Barry Fellows with Barry Roe completing the top three with his 75.

Turkey Greensomes

Club captain David Morgan joined forces on Sunday with the chairman Trevor Pitt to win the first of the Christmas competitions at Brean for 2021 after scoring 43 stableford points in the Turkey Greensomes.

This score was matched by John Cranley and Dave Mann but Morgan and Pitt landed the spoils courtesy of their 22 point back nine score. Third place was secured by Tony Higgins and Kevin Davies who scored 42.

The Seniors had a busy week with both their November Medal and Stableford being completed.

A dry and reasonably calm morning on Tuesday saw some impressive scoring in the medal with Phil Barry’s nett 63 being the pick of the bunch.

He won by two from Seniors champion Leighton Jenkins and Brian Read who both handed in nett 65s. Jenkins was declared the runner-up  by virtue of his better back nine.

Alan Evans was the leading player in Thursday’s Stableford with his score of 40 points. With this he claimed the win in Division Two as he held a two point advantage over Ken Rouse and Roger Phillips. Rouse was awarded second on a back nine countback.

In the first division it was Don Edmondson who took victory but only after a countback. He defeated Brian Read courtesy of the better back nine after both had posted 39 point returns. Ian Adams was placed third, one point adrift of the leading duo.
