Gianluigi Donnarumma saves England's fifth penalty, taken by Bukayo Saka.

Heartache for England as penalties prove their undoing once again

THREE missed efforts in a penalty shout-out cost England their chance of glory in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley tonight.

Harry Kane and Harry Maguire set Gareth Southgate’s side on the right road as they found the back of the net with England’s first two efforts.

But amidst two heroic saves by Jordan Pickford, three of England’s young guns all lost their nerve.

Marcus Rashford hit a post, then Jadon Sancho and Bakary Sako saw their efforts saved, to hand the Italians victory.

The evening started brlliantly for England when Luke Shaw fired home inside the first two minutes.

But Italy came more and more into the game and it was no surprise when Leonardo Bonucci equalised with a scrambled effort in the 67th minute.

Neither side could force a winner in the 90 minutes, and extra time also proved a stalemate.

Ironically Southgate brought on Rashford and Sancho in the final seconds, specifically to take penalties.

No doubt those decisions will give him as many sleepless nights as his penalty miss at Euro ’96 which put Germany through to the final.
