DAVE Porter and Simon Baunton were victorious in Saturday’s Pairs Aggregate Stableford competition at Brean.
Porter produced a stunning gross level par round which accumulated him a massive 47 points, five more than anyone else could muster individually on the day.
Porter, who is a two time former club champion, saw his partner Baunton produce a steady card of 34 points and this was easily enough to give the duo a comfortable winning advantage of five points over a quartet of pairs who totalled 76.
A complex countback was required to ascertain the finishing positions from 2nd to 5th with all the contenders back nine points totals scrutinised.
Jeff Milton (36) and John Ham (40) were awarded second with Milton’s back nine of 22 points proving decisive. Third place went to Chris Fairchild (40) and Gordy Wheelaghan (36) ahead of the Rob Pelzer/Neil Barker and Nigel Ellis/Phil Barry partnerships.
Dave Mann had the round of the day in Sunday’s May Monthly Stableford as he returned 45 points to claim Division Three success.
Mann took full advantage of the improved conditions later on to register an impressive nine point winning margin over his Divisional runner up, Lee Roberts-Neale. Andrew Smallwood was placed third on 34.
Head Greenkeeper Max Smith certainly found the course that he tends much to his liking as he secured his first win at Brean in Division Two.
He was the only player, other than Mann, to surpass the 40 point mark on the day as his 42 point card saw him home by three from Brian Read. Steve Hill edged out Pete Dunn for third after both scored 35 points.
The closest finish of the day was in the top flight where Scott Miles ended two clear of the chasing pack. Miles posted 38 points in the wetter early morning conditions and was two better than Kevin White who took second. Dan Broom was third on 35 after a countback with Ron Edmondson.
Ladies Monthly Medal
Millie Jones registered her second successive Ladies Monthly Medal win as she claimed the May version and with it the Lady Presidents Putter. Her nett 69 compiled on the breezy alternate day of the previous Saturday saw her victorious by three strokes from Sue Wright.
Wright was in turn one clear of Lady Captain-elect Bev Cranley who settled for third. Despite ending out of the top three Lyn Bird enjoyed a profitable day as she scooped the rolled over Two’s pot after making a birdie at the short second during her round.
After collecting his Divisional win in the previous Saturday’s Monthly Medal Pete Dunn quickly added the Seniors May Medal to his 2021 list of victories on Tuesday.
He returned an excellent nett 65 which gave him success in Division One of the Seniors event and he enjoyed a comfortable eight stroke wining margin over Mike Hurman. Hurman held off John Procter for second on a countback.
David Morris won Division Two, just as he did in the Seniors April event, to make it two Medal wins from two since golf’s return from lockdown. This time a nett 66 secured him the top spot and he held a two stroke cushion over Mike Allen. Chris Stephens was third on 71.
