IN the last few weeks eight players have committed their futures to Somerset County Cricket Club.
James Hildreth, Josh Davey, Jack Leach, Lewis Goldsworthy, Tom Lammonby, Steve Davies, Kasey Aldridge and Roelof van der Merwe have all put pen to paper on contract extensions – and Head Coach, Jason Kerr couldn’t be happier.
“Obviously, we are absolutely delighted by this news,” he said. “We’ve talked a lot about the journey that we’re on, and to be successful we need to retain the nucleus of the squad. For so many players to have committed their futures to this club and to that journey is very exciting for us.
“We are on a journey which, for me, is about growth and getting better. These eight guys, along with the rest of the squad, are incredibly aspirational and their work ethic is off the chart. We want to keep improving and we want to keep challenging for silverware.
“This is a really exciting time for us and everyone has worked incredibly diligently over the winter so far and we can’t wait to get going.”
Here is what Jason had to say about each of the eight.
“Hildy is very aware of what we are trying to achieve and his performances on the field have been outstanding for a number of years. His record for us is well documented and I know that he will be looking to put in some significant contributions for us to show everyone what he is capable of over the next few years.”
“Josh is a really important cog in our machine. We pride ourselves on how we operate as a bowling unit, and to do that everyone has to deliver their skills at a high level. He is an incredibly important part of the jigsaw for us and he’s demonstrated time and time again over the last few years what he is capable of. He’s already invested a lot of time over this winter looking to improve and we’re excited to see what he can do.”
“Leachy bleeds Somerset and I’m delighted that he’s committed his long term future. He wants to be here and it’s really important to have international cricketers who are as equally determined when they come back from international duty. To have him here as part of the fabric for the long term is brilliant. He’s inspirational and it’s great for the other guys to see that someone of his calibre wants to be here for the long term.”
“There’s no doubt that Lewis has a bright future. We saw that in terms of the way that he handled himself in the games that he played last year. He demonstrated high skill levels and good cricket knowhow. I’m sure there will be further opportunities for him next year.”
“Tom had an outstanding summer and he’s looking to build on that. He has a phenomenal work ethic, and he is excited about getting better. We’re really looking forward to seeing how his future unfolds. We’re pleased that is going to be with us for the next few years.”
“Steve is outstanding and his wicketkeeping is phenomenal. He’s efficient and catches pretty much everything plus he plays an important role when it comes to supporting the captains out in the middle. His contributions with the bat are extremely important as well. He’s an outstanding cricketer and he’s brilliant in the dressing room.”
“Kasey came on to the staff last year after an exciting winter with the England Under 19s, but with no Second XI cricket last year he was unable to get the opportunities that we had hoped to give him. However, he certainly flourished in the environment and he had a really productive summer within our environment. To see the way that he has gone about his business in the winter has been really exciting.”
Roelof Van Der Merwe
“Roelof is an outstanding character and he epitomises what you want a pro to be. He gives 100% in absolutely everything he does both on and off the field. He’s incredibly supportive of his teammates and ultimately he is a very good performer for the First XI.”
