Vital flood prevention work ahead of schedule

WORK by Somerset County Council Highways to reduce hazardous flooding on a key route between West Somerset and Taunton is moving onto the next phase earlier than expected.

With the scheme running ahead of schedule there’s an important change to closure arrangements put in place this week on the A39 at Carhampton Cross to carry out the crucial flood prevention work.

The day-time 9.30am to 3.30pm closure on the A39 now finishes after Monday, October 18.

The rest of the work will be carried out during a night-time closure from 6.30pm to 11.30pm week days only from Tuesday, October 19 and is expected to be completed by Thursday, October 28.

There will be no access to the B3191 Blue Anchor Bay Road during these times.

Danger

A council spokesperson said: “Excessive water – particularly during the winter months – regularly poses a danger to road users and makes the road impassable, as well as causing flooding to people’s homes and the B3191 Eastbury Road.

“Somerset County Council is delivering a £350,000 drainage and resurfacing scheme, funded by the Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA) to help prevent flooding incidents.

“Work started on October 11 and includes significant drainage structure upgrades to manage water volumes.

“The new schedule from October 19will mean day-time bus services between Minehead and Taunton, which had been affected by the closure will be now operating during 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Patience

Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said: “We’re really grateful to local people and road users for their patience during these works.

“We know it’s meant a change to some bus services and some disruption, but the team is making excellent progress and we’re pleased to see they’re ahead of schedule on delivering these vital works.”

During the road closures a diversion route will be clearly signposted on site or can be found at www.travelsomerset.co.uk/roadworks.
