MP Ian Liddell-Grainger says he is ‘bitterly disappointed’ Somerset is to be placed under Tier 3 restrictions from Boxing Day.
But he has appealed to his constituents to observe all the stipulated precautions as the only way of ensuring the regime was as short-lived as possible.
Mr Liddell-Grainger, Conservative member for Bridgwater and West Somerset, said he had been hoping the county would escape the worst of the anti-Covid controls having survived so long as a low-risk zone.
“I am not the only one who has been expressing my gratitude to local people for the conscientious way they have responded to earlier restrictions and done their very best to halt the spread of the virus,” he said.
“Unfortunately even the best of human efforts can be undermined when one is dealing with such an insidious threat.
“I know many traders are going to feel this as a particular blow at a time when they were relying on New Year business to repair some of the damage they have suffered from two lockdowns.
“All I can do however is to urge everyone to familiarise themselves with the restrictions and abide by them faithfully. That is the only route which offers any hope of an early end to this bitterly disappointing situation.”
