Smoke from serious fire at Highbridge industrial estate stops traffic on M5

A BLAZE at an industrial estate in Highbridge has caused major disruption this evening.

Scores of people were evacuated from the Walrow Industrial Estate in Commerce Way after fire crews from across the county were called to the scene just before 6pm.

And at one stage police stopped traffic on the M5 between Junctions 22 and 23 because smoke was drifting across the motorway.

A spokesperson for the Devon and Someret Fire and Rescue Service said crews arrived to find flames issuing from the roof of a single storey vehicle workshop and storage area. It took most of  the evening to put out the flames and then dampen down the severely damaged building.

An eye witness told the Burnham and Highbridge News: “There was lots of thick black smoke and some flames.

“The police got everybody to walk to a nearby roundabout at the end of the road.

“Lots of people are stuck because they can’t get to their cars to drive home.”

The fire service said they have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
