Six years for Bridgwater man who raped teenager

A BRIDGWATER man has been jailed for more than six years for raping a teenager after a night of drinking.

Jack McGinty, now 25, was 21 at the time of the offence. He denied rape and assault by penetration but was found guilty after a trial in September.

Judge Paul Cook said he had shown no remorse and was still in a state of denial about the offences.

Taunton Crown Court heard how McGinty took advantage of his victim as she lay asleep on a bed.

The victim, who was 17 at the time, said in a statement the assault had left her suicidal and psychologically damaged.

The judge said she had been vulnerable and woke to find McGinty assaulting her. She had frozen but had told him “no” during the forceful assault.

The court was told McGinty, of Myrtle Close, worked in hospitality but his hopes of being a teacher in future were now in tatters.

He gave McGinty credit for his previous good character and reduced the sentence from a starting point of eight years.
