THE calm of the summer heat is set to be shattered by thunderstorms at the weekend, say the Met Office.
The amber alert for extreme heat ends at 11.59pm on Thursday but a yellow warning for rain kicks in at 12.01am on Saturday and runs throughout the weekend.
Rain is expected to arrive in Somerset in the early hours of Saturday and will continue throughout the day with a mix of heavy and light showers.
Some respite from the rain will be had on Saturday night but thunder showers will hit the county from Sunday morning onwards, with heavy showers in the evening.
The good news is that temperatures will generally remain above 20C (68F).
Met Office Deputy Chief Operational Meteorologist, David Oliver, said: “This yellow rain warning comes as temperatures are set to dip for many areas over the weekend.
“A spell of rain, heavy in places perhaps with some thunder, moves in from the southwest late on Friday and into Saturday.
“This is followed up by an unsettled weekend for much of England and Wales with showers breaking out widely. Some very heavy showers or thunderstorms are on the cards, especially during Sunday.”
