THE Government last night confirmed that the elections to the new Somerset Council will take place in May 2022 as planned.
The decision welcomed by Ian Liddell-Grainger, MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset, who said had been working against a “vigorous campaign behind the scenes to delay them for yet another year”.
This morning, during Business Questions in Westminster, Mr Ian Liddell-Grainger congratulated Ministers for taking the decision and told the Leader of the House: “It would have been absolutely appalling to put these elections off again.
“My Rt Honourable Friend knows just how important democracy is. The Government did not listen to public opinion during the consultation for this new council and then did not listen to the majority of people who voted against the proposal in the local referendum.
“But I am delighted that they have now decided to hold these elections.”
