CASES of Covid-19 in Somerset continue to increase rapidly as the Omicron variant sweeps across the county.
In the 24 hours to yesterday (Tuesday), December 28, a total of 661 new cases were reported in the four districts.
Those were made up of 207 in South Somerset, 182 in Taunton and West Somerset, 122 in Mendip and 150 in Sedgemoor.
The news comes as the daily national figure for new infections was also the highest recorded in one day – with 129,471 new cases of coronavirus recorded across the UK.
A total of 9,546 people were in hospital in England with Covid-19 as of 8am on December 28, according to new figures from NHS England.
This is up 38% from a week earlier and is the highest number since March 3.
