By the time you read this the Government will be well on the way to delivering its first election promise. We will leave the EU on January 31 st – that is certain – and certainty is the very thing we all need. No more absurd delays in Parliament. Instead some sure-footed action to give the NHS the funding it needs, boost our schools, invest in big new projects and get the whole country moving again. I believe it is equally important to put the divisions of the last three years behind us and work together to unite the nation with purpose and optimism.
There will be major challenges of course. But there is now a Government with the strength of numbers to make things work. Frankly, the election results bowled me over. In 2010 almost 25000 people voted for me. This time nearly 36000 folk put crosses against my name. I will work very hard indeed to repay their trust. The Conservatives also have responsibility to look after people in the midlands and the north who had never voted this way before. Even the Prime Minister is humbled by the landslide. He says he will not let anyone down. I believe him.
