Cat Jameson and her super colourful and eco-friendly rain cape business, Carny Valley.
Ever put a raincoat on over a perfect outfit and felt deflated? Squeezed a waterproof over layers and felt like the Michelin man? Here’s the solution. After dressing up at many rainy UK festivals for over 20 years, Cat realised what was missing. Rainwear that compliments rather than just covering up. OK, yes, if you’re scaling a mountain in gale force winds and driving rain, we recommend you wear some technical clothing, including waterproof trousers. If you want to feel amazing in your everyday outfits, slay at festivals and enjoy the feeling of freedom that capes give you, these are for you!
“These capes come in two styles – Single and Double Tier – and a huge range of colours, from pastel bright in innovative washable waxed cotton, standard waxed cottons in bold reds and purples to earthy tones.. even camo. Self-expression is what it’s about.. Not having to settle for standard dull raincoat colours. They’re unisex and one size fits all – tried and tested – we’re about inclusivity not exclusivity” Cat told us
‘Where’s the rest of it?’ Cat said “I’ve heard that more than once! Yes, they really do keep you dry. They’re like an umbrella on your shoulders.. with a good hood. They channel the rain out and off.. not straight down and onto your legs like a fitted hip-length jacket. If there’s sideways rain, your legs will get wet whether you’re wearing a jacket OR a cape, and, wouldn’t you rather be fabulous?”
Carny Valley capes don’t just look amazing; Cat designed them to be functional too. All capes come with an S-Biner; a double ended karabiner attached to the d-rings at the neck. Don’t know what the weather’s going to do but want a waterproof just in case? Stopped raining and want to take your cape off? Simply clip the S-Biner to a belt loop, bumbag, or bag and that’s the Carny Valley hands free stow system! This is great for everyday life, not just for festivals. Gigs, school runs, walking.. Hands up for a hands-free life!
Slow fashion.. Rightly, we’re hearing that phrase more and more. “My design process featured sustainability right from the start” said Cat. “These capes are made to last – an investment, not throwaway. Re-wax them when they need it, maybe yearly, and they’ll last for years. They’re cotton and have minimal fastenings. My main material source is British Millerain, a member of the Better Cotton Initiative, ensuring cotton production is both socially and environmentally responsible. All my packaging is recycled, recyclable and reusable. If you produce something, there’s a negative impact and for me, minimising the impact I have is vital”.
Are you joining the cape revolution this year? Rain will not stop play. We are adventurers in all weathers!
