Bridgwater’s second ‘Local Pantry’ enjoys successful first year

THE Local Pantry for South Bridgwater, based in Hamp, will tomorrow be celebrating its first year of operation in which the scheme has grown to reach nearly 50 households.

The members who joined the Local Pantry scheme have benefited from the varied and affordable good food on offer.

A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said: “The scheme stops excess food going to waste and so also reduces the UKs carbon footprint.

“In the last six-months alone, by buying from FareShare, two tonnes of CO2 have been saved which would take two trees a whole lifetime to absorb out of the atmosphere.

Loan scheme

“Volunteers and members already swap recipes and this month sees the launch of a kitchen equipment loan scheme.

“The team leader, Scarlett, and her deputy, Becky, also have exciting ideas for the future, starting with a Christmas Fair this Saturday and¬†cooking demonstrations and workshops in the New Year.”

The pantry is the second to open in the town. East Bridgwater Local Pantry was launched in July 2020 and has also grown. A new pantry will be launching in January to serve the Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea area.
