Artwork highlights modern slavery – and Bridgwater’s historic stance

HIDDEN Voices Bridgwater highlighted the fight against slavery this evening with an event at St Mary’s Church.

Organiser Sian Owen said: “October the 18th is National Anti Slavery Day and we held the event to celebrate the town’s history in petitioning against the slave trade, and to pledge to come together to fight against modern slavery.

“I asked local people to produce a piece of art around the subject of ‘Banishing Slavery’ and the art was on display in the church.”

In 1785 Bridgwater became the first town in the country to petition against the slave trade.
